The Power of Craniosacral Therapy

Imagine living your life with more ease, less pain, and the ability to handle daily stressors more easily. You may be wondering if this is possible if you suffer from chronic pain due to an accident, injury, illness, unresolved trauma or chronic stress over time. Right? What could change in your life if there was a healing modality that could help take away your pain and lessen your stress? Would you want to give it a try? Craniosacral therapy (CST) can give you that, and it provides you with a deep sense of relaxation as well.

Here are some of the benefits; a brief picture about what CranioSacral therapy is and some of the benefits of this remarkable therapy. Start living a life with less stress, pain and more ease.

Dr. John Upledger, the founder of craniosacral therapy, says “By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.” CST helps with a variety of acute and chronic conditions such as chronic lower back pain, neck pain, PTSD, migraines, anxiety disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, TMJ, concussion, dysfunction, and burnout just to name a few.

For over 20 years I have been practicing CST. My training and education is through the Upledger Institute located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and is the leader of noninvasive training therapies in the world.

At its core, Craniosacral therapy has the ability to get to the root or origin of what is causing problems or restrictions and helps to relieve the pain and dysfunction you are experiencing.

This body work, when facilitated by a trained therapist or health care practitioner, helps to find areas of blocked energy patterns and/or physical restrictions in the muscles or fascia that are causing the pain, discomfort, and inflammation, so they can be released.

The techniques I have learned to listen to and support the body’s innate ability to heal and release has been at the core of why I love this work.

The nuts and bolts of the work:

Craniosacral therapy works with your cerebrospinal fluid and supports healthy flow optimally, without restrictions. When the cerebrospinal fluid can flow properly, other bodily processes are able to function more efficiently; thereby reducing pain and dysfunction and helping people live with less stress and more ease.

According to Dr. John Upledger, “Craniosacral therapy is a very soft touch, hands-on method of treatment.” It deals with what we have named the craniosacral system, which is composed of a membrane that is waterproof that encases the brain and spinal cord and carries within it cerebrospinal fluid. The pressure and volume of the fluid go up and down. That makes it a hydraulic system, which needs to be free to move all the time because the fluid should be moving and bringing nutrients to all the neurons and be taking away wastes and so forth

Cerebrospinal fluid is what nourishes the brain and spinal cord, and healthy flow is essential for a healthy body; not to mention how this affects all the soft tissue in the body.

When restrictions imprint into soft tissue like your fascia, muscle, covering of the brain, organs, ligaments or tendons it can compromise your body’s ability to function; not to mention causing pain that gets in the way of your ability to function optimally.

You may be wondering, “what can I expect in a CranioSacral Treatment?”

Craniosacral therapy is a full body treatment. Clients are asked to lie on a massage table while remaining fully clothed. The therapist then places his or her hands on different areas of the client’s body where they sense the rhythm is off. The therapist then holds that area with a touch not usually greater than five grams, or the weight of a nickel, and waits for the fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscles, organs, bones, nerves, etc.) to release. The release may be felt as heat coming off from the body, softening, pulsing, etc.

Restrictions occurring anywhere on the body can cause problems in a completely different place. Restrictions in the neck may be causing low back or sacral problems. A problem in the foot may be causing issues in the low back or sacrum area.

Restrictions in the actual membrane that houses the brain and spinal cord, can be causing headaches/migraines, neck aches, ear aches, emotional difficulties, and learning difficulties, as well as other problems. Craniosacral therapy has a way of showing us that everything is definitely connected.

I am extremely passionate about craniosacral therapy and have been solely practicing this since 1995, and since then I have helped and supported 100’s of clients. I love that I can hold space and support the healing process for my clients. It is such an honor and I am in awe of the body’s resiliency and capacity to heal and restore my client’s to vibrant health.

If you are struggling with any form of chronic pain or chronic stress due to an accident, injury, trauma, illness, or event over time, CranioSacral therapy may be a match for you.

Until you are no longer in pain or discomfort, it’s often difficult to realize just how much of your time and energy could be powerfully used in other areas of living the life you really want to live!

In general, CranioSacral Therapy may promote:

  • Healing, alleviating a range of illness and dysfunction, including chronic pain, central nervous system disorders, head and neck pain, TMJ dysfunction, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, seizure disorders, hormonal imbalances, chronic sinusitis, and more

  • Improved functioning of the autonomic nervous system, enabling the body to respond more effectively to stress

  • Improved immune system function

  • Concussion/brain trauma

  • TMJ

  • Release of tissue and bone restrictions, improving mobility

  • Lower back and neck

  • Pain alleviation

  • PTSD

  • Overall relaxation and revitalization
